Checked July 24, 2026, Starlink's U.S. specification publishes typical land-service performance of 45-280 Mbps download, 10-30 Mbps upload, and 25-60 ms latency. It states that actual performance varies and is not guaranteed. Read Starlink's current specifications.

Starlink's current policy describes unlimited Standard data for Standard service and a fallback to Standard data after included Priority data is exhausted. Plan treatment and availability can differ, so verify the exact order. Read the current fair-use policy.

Hughesnet

Checked July 24, 2026, Hughesnet advertises plans up to 100 Mbps while warning that speeds are not guaranteed and availability varies by location. Its Fusion option combines satellite and wireless technologies where available. Review current Hughesnet plans and Hughesnet's usage guidance.

Viasat

Checked July 24, 2026, Viasat advertises plans from 25 to 150 Mbps in select areas. Its plan page also explains that traffic can receive lower priority after the plan's high-speed data threshold, so the headline rate alone is incomplete. Review current Viasat plans and disclosures.

LEO versus geostationary: what the architecture changes

A lower orbit can reduce the physical path compared with a geostationary satellite. Historical FCC measurement work found very high latency for the geostationary satellite service in its sample, but that 2018 report is context - not a current promise for any provider or plan. Read the FCC report and methodology.

  • Lower space-path delay does not remove gateway, terrestrial routing, congestion, Wi-Fi, server, or application delay.
  • A peak download result does not predict loaded latency during an upload, video call, or household busy period.
  • Compare repeated measurements and application behavior, not orbit type or an advertised maximum by itself.

Address-level decision workflow

  1. Check every provider at the service address. Record the exact plan name, equipment, installation, contract, priority or usage policy, and current broadband label.
  2. Define the workload: concurrent calls, cloud backup, streaming, remote access, gaming, and any outage-sensitive tasks.
  3. Test the existing service by Ethernet at quiet and busy times. Then repeat over Wi-Fi without changing other variables.
  4. Prefer a trial or return period when available. Validate the actual address through weather and evening demand before depending on the service.
  5. Keep an independent backup path if the household has medical, safety, work, or communication requirements that cannot tolerate a single-service outage.

Installation and obstruction safety

Obstructions can interrupt a satellite path, but clearing the view does not justify unsafe roof, pole, tree, cable-entry, grounding, or lightning-protection work. Use the provider's obstruction tool and installation guidance, then hire a qualified installer where elevated or electrical work is involved. Announced service is not available service

Checked July 24, 2026, Amazon says Project Kuiper is now named Amazon Leo and describes an initial customer rollout later in 2026. Why does satellite latency vary so much?
Orbit geometry, routing, ground infrastructure, congestion, weather, and the test endpoint all affect a result. Low Earth orbit can shorten the space path compared with geostationary service, but it does not guarantee a specific application response time.

The word unlimited does not describe every plan rule. A plan may distinguish Standard, Priority, or other data and may reduce priority after an included amount. Read the current broadband label, fair-use policy, and order terms for the exact address and plan.
