Capacity planner
Internet speed requirements calculator
Plan for what happens at the same time—not an inflated “fast internet” label. Combine streams, calls, games, work sessions, and uploads to estimate download, upload, ping, and jitter needs.

Requirements by activity
These are practical planning baselines, not guarantees from any service. Updated 2026-07-24.
| Activity | Download | Upload | Ping below | Jitter below | Planning note | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Web browsing and email | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps | 150 ms | 40 ms | Per active user; large attachments need more upload capacity. | Editorial planning baseline for an active browser and email session. Swift editorial baseline |
| HD video stream | 8 Mbps | 1 Mbps | 100 ms | 30 ms | Per simultaneous 1080p stream across common adaptive services. | Editorial planning baseline informed by official service recommendations. |
| 4K video stream | 25 Mbps | 1 Mbps | 100 ms | 30 ms | Per simultaneous 4K stream; some services adapt below this. | Conservative editorial planning baseline informed by official service recommendations. |
| HD video call | 4 Mbps | 4 Mbps | 100 ms | 30 ms | Per active camera; stability matters more than excess download speed. | Rounded planning baseline informed by official 1080p video-call requirements. |
| Remote work session (excluding video calls) | 10 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 100 ms | 30 ms | Covers cloud apps, messaging, and normal file transfers; add video calls separately. | Editorial composite for concurrent work applications, not a vendor minimum. Swift editorial baseline |
| Online gaming | 10 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 50 ms | 15 ms | Game downloads need far more throughput; live play prioritizes latency. | Editorial gameplay baseline; title, platform, and route conditions vary. Swift editorial baseline |
| 1080p livestream upload | 10 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 80 ms | 20 ms | Per active 1080p broadcast, including encoder and audio traffic. | Conservative editorial baseline informed by official broadcast bitrate guidance. |
| Cloud backup or large upload | 10 Mbps | 25 Mbps | 150 ms | 40 ms | Higher upload speed shortens completion time; latency is less critical. | Editorial target chosen for practical completion time rather than a service minimum. Swift editorial baseline |
How the estimate works
The calculator adds bandwidth for simultaneous sessions, then adds 25% headroom for protocol overhead, adaptive bitrate, and ordinary background traffic. It uses the strictest latency target among the selected real-time activities.
A plan’s advertised speed is only one boundary. Wi-Fi quality, congestion, device limits, and provider routing can still reduce the result. Use the live speed test and compare busy-hour results with quiet-hour results.
Version 2026.07.24 distinguishes linked first-party service guidance from Swift editorial planning targets. Vendor guidance informs the baseline; the published values are not universal service guarantees. Data is available under CC BY 4.0. Attribute “SwiftSpeedTest Internet speed requirements,” include the version, and link this methodology when reusing it.
